Park to Broad convened local business leaders, property owners, and representatives from the offices of State Representative Keith Harris and Councilmember Jeffery Young this week at Remedy Spa on 29th Street in Brewerytown for our  “Future of 29th and Girard” community planning meeting.

The gathering was part of a collaboration with the Community Design Collaborative, an organization that provides pro-bono preliminary design services to community and economic development nonprofits. The Collaborative matched Park to Broad with a team of local volunteer design professionals from the architecture and engineering firm Stantec. Many of these volunteers live in the neighborhood and facilitated the community conversation on experiences, priorities, and potential design interventions that could make Brewerytown’s busiest intersection a safer, more welcoming and inclusive neighborhood space.

The following themes and priorities emerged:

  • Engaging long-time residents in the design process

  • Creating a sense of community ownership and pride for the space.

  • Considering the interests of all the community’s overlapping users - neighbors, customers, SEPTA riders, employees, and visitors

  • Developing signage and art that communicates 29th & Girard as the center of Brewerytown and welcomes visitors from West Philly, North Philadelphia and Fairmount.

  • Designing an environment that welcomes and encourages positive behavior.
